An old simile, but a good one:
"Becoming a partner is a decision, not a reward. . . . Becoming a partner in a law firm is like winning a pie-eating contest where the prize is more pie."

Well, you get to choose your flavors of pie and you get credit for the pies the others are eating... but yeah its a pretty solid metaphor.
